The Yeomen of the Guard is Gilbert and Sullivan’s one dramatic opera- one that presents a serious story with realistic characters, rather than the usual “topsy-turvey” world inhabited by the denizens of the Pinafore, Titipu and Barataria.
2008 marks the 120th anniversary of the origional production at the Savoy Theater, London. Encore! assembled a distinguished cast of 50 to produce the work and, though it has pruned some of the excessive dialogue in the book, reinstated some of the music cut immediately before the opening night in 1888.
The production has been designed and directed by Robert Binder, with Arlene Chertoff handling choreography and Paul Saulter at the helm as musical director.
Performed at the Hirch Theater, Beit Shmuel, Jerusalem, December 2008.
