Originally produced in 1946 with the Broadway star Ethel Merman in the leading role, Annie was released as a major M-G-M film starring Betty Hutton and Howard Keel and has been revived countless times over the past few decades, with a smash-hit revival on Broadway starting in 1999 that starred contemporary celebrities.
The plot revolves around legendary sharpshooter Annie Oakley, who claimed that she could “shoot the fuzz off a peach”, and her co-star Frank Butler in a championship shooting match and courtship. Annie and Frank toured together in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show for the latter part of the 19th century and died in 1926 – just twenty years before they were immortalized in Dorothy Fields’ libretto for Irving Berlin’s outstanding musical score (containing such hits as “Doin’ What Comes Natur’ly”, “Anything You Can Do (I Can Do Better)”, “They Say It’s Wonderful,” and the entertainment world anthem, “There’s No Business Like Show Business”.)
Encore!’s cast for the upcoming production features the finest of local talent: Miri Fraenkel (who has previously appeared as Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady and Nancy in Oliver!) will fill Annie Oakley’s boots, while Shachar Shamai (recently seen in A Little Night Music will portray her love interest. Others featured in the cast of 50 are Jerry Stevenson, Lucy Roth, Jeff Berk, Eric Guth, and Marvin Meital (as Chief Sitting Bull). A 10-piece orchestra will accompany the performances.
For sharp shootin’, sharp singin’ and dancin’, don’t miss this wonderful production of Annie Get Your Gun!
