SYNOPSIS
Oliver Twist is an orphan working in a workhouse in London. When he asks for more gruel, Mr. Bumble and the Widow Corney, caretakers of the workhouse, sell Oliver to an undertaker, Mr. Sowerberry. Oliver escapes and runs away to London, where he meets the Artful Dodger, a boy pickpocket. Dodger invites the naive Oliver to live with his gang of pickpockets under the eye of old Fagin. After meeting Nancy, the loving girlfriend of terrifying burglar Bill Sykes, Oliver is arrested on a job by wealthy old Mr. Brownlow. Brownlow takes pity on Oliver and brings him home to his house instead of sending him to jail.
During a lively evening at the local pub, Dodger appears and tells Fagin, Nancy and Bill about Oliver’s capture and removal to the Brownlow household. Fagin and Bill decide to kidnap Oliver to protect themselves, and recruit the reluctant Nancy to help. The next morning, Mr. Brownlow sends Oliver on an errand, where he is promptly nabbed by Nancy and Bill. They bring him back to Fagin’s den, where tensions are running high.
Back at the workhouse, unhappily married Bumble and Corney discover locket belonging to Oliver’s mother. Hoping to profit from a reward for information, they visit Mr. Brownlow, who throws them out, but not before seeing the picture inside the locket and realizing that Oliver is actually his great nephew.
Plagued by her conscience, Nancy visits Brownlow and promises to deliver Oliver that night on London Bridge. Bill realizes her plan, follows her and kidnaps Oliver, clubbing Nancy to death for betraying him. Mr. Brownlow discovers Nancy’s body and rouses the police. A large crowd forms, and following Bill’s dog, discover Fagin’s hideout and find Bill holding Oliver hostage. A policeman shoots Bill, and Oliver is saved and reunited with Mr. Brownlow.
